More creature designs for Kane!
The first issue of the new Solomon Kane mini-series, Death's Black Riders comes out this month and I got to have the fun of designing the Black Riders for the series! Taking place after the events in Solomon Kane: The Castle of the Devil -- but written to stand on its own -- this new series delves deep into the horrors scattered throughout Germany's Black Forest. Dark Horse's new Solomon Kane series features the return of writer Scott Allie and artist Mario Guevara (The Lone Ranger and Tonto).

Cheers to the future and a Happy New Year everyone! 2010 is already turning into a busy year and I couldn’t be happier. During the B.P.R.D.: 1947 break, I was working ahead on the new B.P.R.D. series, King of Fear which begins this month and concludes the Scorched Earth triology we started with B.P.R.D.: The Warning!

Also this year will be the new Marquis and the Midwife graphic novel from Dark Horse Comics, the next Solomon Kane mini-series “Death’s Black Riders” that I did some creature designs for and there’s some other surprises and announcements along the way, so check back soon and see what’s coming up!

MDHP Volume 4 on Sale!
Online Marquis story in print
The fourth volume of the online comics anthology MySpace Dark Horse Presents reprints a variety of stories that originally appeared online, including Star Wars Dark Times: Blue Harvest. Contributions from online-strip creators Chris Onstad, David Malki, and Kate Beaton. Eric Powell’s backwoods-charm-filled series The Goon is the subject of an “interpretation” from Gossip Whore Ann Romano. Joss Whedon teams with Season Eight cover artist Jo Chen for a special Buffy the Vampire Slayer story, and also included in this volume is the Marquis and the Coachman short story I did as an introduction to the world of the Marquis!

  WONDER WOMAN DAY 2009!
Original artwork auctioned for benefit
The fourth annual Wonder Woman Day is at hand, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Andy Mangels has organized a "Wonder Woman Day" event and auction each year to benefit shelters and crisis lines for Woman and Children — The Bradley-Angle House, Raphael House of Portland and the Portland Women's Crisis Line.

A slew of artists and companies have donated drawings and merchandise for the auction, including myself with this "Wonder Woman and the Space Apes" drawing. There's lots of wonderful art on display, so please check it out and bid or donate for a really good cause!

  
  ARTIST PRESENTATION at the 2009 ICAF!
School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Oct 15-17
I'm honored to have been asked to give an artist presentation at the upcoming International Comics Art Forum (ICAF) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago this month. ICAF is an annual academic conference dedicated to promoting the scholarly study and appreciation of comic art, including comic strips, comic books, comics albums and graphic novels, magazine and newspaper cartooning, caricature, and comics in electronic media and I'll be giving a talk about my work along with a Q&A session on Oct 15th from 2:15-3:30 pm at the SAIC Ballroom. Other artists giving presentations during the conference are Sara Varon (US), Pere and Max Joan (Spain) and John Miers (UK). More information on the conference and other events can be found on the ICAF site.

UPDATE: I'll also be doing a signing at the Graham Crackers Chicago Loop store on Friday, October 16th 4:30-6:30 pm. If you're in the area, stop by and say hello! 		 
 
SOLOMON KANE part 1
Free Story Online!
Online this month is the first chapter of a 2-part Solomon Kane story at MySpace Dark Horse Presents, written by Scott Allie and drawn by myself with Dave Stewart on colors! Issue 27 goes up on October 7th and features "Solomon Kane: All the Damned Souls at Sea" finds Kane having to deal with a witches curse during a long sea voyage! Be sure to check back at the DHP MySpace page next month for the exciting conclusion! 

 
  DOCTOR WHO cover artwork
Charlie Kirchoff who worked as the colorist on "The Zombies That Ate the World" for Humanoïdes has written a Doctor Who comic for IDW— illustrated by the amazing Tom Mandrake— and I tagged along and provided the cover for the issue (also colored by Charlie). DOCTOR WHO : BLACK DEATH / WHITE LIFE follows the Doctor and his companion Martha as they mistakenly land the TARDIS during the Great Plague of London, the discovery of a healer draws them into a mystery that could mean the end of Martha!

Book Release and Art Show

Floating World Comics in Portland, OR will be having a Marquis: Inferno art exhibit starting with a book release party September 3rd from 6-10pm. The art exhibit will include some illustrations and pages from Marquis: Inferno along with B.P.R.D. original art and work from other Dark Horse projects I've done.   THE MARQUIS AND THE BLOGSPOT
With the new Dark Horse Marquis: Inferno collection already at the printers and only a few months away from hitting the shelves, I’ve started work on The Marquis and the Midwife original graphic novel for 2010. While this website will have the usual work announcements in the news section, I also decided to start a Marquis blog that I’ll be updating with rare and unseen artwork to the past Marquis series, sneak peeks at the progress to the Midwife storyline and some of the fan art I’ve gotten over the years.

Also on the Dark Horse Comics website is a 6 page preview to the upcoming Marquis: Inferno collection!
  
  DRAW! Magazine #17—
Free Eats!
The new issue of DRAW! Magazine #17 from Twomorrows Publishing hit the stands last month and contained an interview with me talking with Mike Manley about how I work on B.P.R.D. and other things. Unfortunately, instead of the finished interview that I went over adding and clarifying to — the unedited phone transcript got printed in the magazine with all the mistakes and misquotes. (no, I don’t have a couple books coming out from Dark Horse called “The Marquis” and “The Five” — it was “The Marquis and the Midwife”). Apologies to everyone who bought or downloaded the original interview — but online now at the Draw! Magazine blog, Mike Manley has posted the correct interview for everyone to read for free. HEROES CONVENTION 2009!
June 19-21 Charlotte, North Carolina

UPDATE: A huge thanks to Sheldon Drum and Dustin Harbin for another wonderful convention! We had a great time at the show and meeting everyone who stopped by the table and Q&A panel! Already looking forward to coming back next year!

I’ve been invited back to the upcoming Heroes Convention in North Carolina this month, I had a great time at the show last year and look forward to setting up again and meeting everyone who stops by. Last year I had to cut the convention short, but I’ll be attending for all three days this year — I've also provided a new B.P.R.D. pinup for the program book (the original line art to be auctioned for charity at the show) and will have some preview artwork to upcoming projects at my table along with original art, TPBs and sketchbooks for sale.

You can find me at table 517 on the front corner and balmy shores of Indie Island.

On Saturday, June 20th at 4:00pm I'll be doing an interview and audience Q&A conducted by Newsarama's Zack Smith in Room 217A.

  MOTOR CITY COMIC CON 2009!

It's starting to be that comic con time of year! I'll be setting up at the upcoming Motor City Comic Con, May 15-17 at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Michigan.

I have some original artwork on display in the Visual Storytelling Artshow at the Gallery Project in Ann Arbor, MI from April 15th through May 24th. The exhibition centers around visual storytelling and the use of artwork as a sequential narrative in comics and illustration. I have a few B.P.R.D. and other comic pages showing the process from script through layouts/pencils and the final inks. Out now is the latest collection of Sandman Mystery Theatre stories written by Steve Seagle and Matt Wagner that I worked on for DC/Vertigo. Volume 7 collects The Mist and The Phantom of the Fair. As a side note, The Phantom of the Fair was one of the first characters I redesigned along with Diane and Wes / The Golden Age Sandman back when Matt made the pitch to Vertigo for Sandman Mystery Theatre. For some reason I thought the first storyline was going to be a retelling of that story, but it ended up coming into play a couple years later.
